Why Tire Rotations Are Essential for Your Vehicle?
Because of different road conditions and driving habits, not all tires will wear evenly. Because of the impact that tires experience while turning, the outside edges or the front tires will show more wear, while the rear tires will typically wear more evenly. So, if you leave your tires in place, they are going to wear down at significantly different rates over time, and you will need to replace them much sooner.
How often should you rotate your tires? Front and rear-wheel drive vehicles will usually need to have a tire rotation done every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Whereas, all-wheel drive cars need more frequent changes at every 3,000 to 5,000 miles because all tires are actively engaged, resulting in faster wear. It’s best to refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual for specific recommendations.
The Importance of Tire Position
- FWD Tires: You can move the front tires to the back of the car in the same left/right positions. When moving the rear tires to the front, you have to switch the right and left tires.
- RWD Tires: You would do the opposite with RWD vehicles. The rear tires can be moved to the front of the car in the same left/right positions, but when you move the front tires to the rear, you have to switch the left and right tires.
How to Rotate Your Tires at Home
Want to know how to do a tire rotation at home near Sharonville? You will need a car jack, lug nut wrench, and a set of car jacks. Once you have everything needed, included the proper tools, just follow these six easy steps:
- Engage your parking brake as a safety precaution.
- Loosen the lug nuts on all four wheels, but do not completely remove them. This step makes unscrewing them when the tire is elevated much easier.
- Lift one wheel with a car jack and place the jack stand underneath it.
- Remove the tires one by one.
- Use this time to ensure that your tires are filled to the proper tire pressure. After that, you can rotate them according to the appropriate pattern for your type of tire. Place the tire back onto the wheel mount and screw the lug nuts on by hand as far as you can.
- Lower the car from the jack stands and use the lug wrench to finish tightening the nuts. It’s recommended to work the lug nuts diagonally from one to another in a star pattern to ensure even tightening. When the lug nuts are not tightened evenly, it can cause the brake rotor to warp.
