How to Check Brake Fluid

Brakes are, without question, among the most important components of your vehicle. That’s why it matters if your brakes aren’t in good working order. Understanding how to check brake fluid is a solid part of your vehicle maintenance routine and will help keep you safe on Blue Ash and Montgomery streets. Feel uncomfortable checking the brake fluid? Not to worry! The service center at Mercedes-Benz of Cincinnati is always here to assist you by taking care of all of your service needs, in addition to this handy guide to teach you how to check your brake fluid at home or on the road.

What is Brake Fluid?

Brake fluid lubricates your brake pedal. It also greases up your stopping mechanism and shields it from eroding. Brake fluid, in many vehicles, is glycol-ether based, yet there are silicone-based (DOT-5) and mineral oil-based (LHM) fluids available also. Check out your owner’s manual to discover which type your particular vehicle uses.

3 Steps to Check Brake Fluid

  • Find your vehicle’s brake fluid reservoir within the master cylinder. Refer to your owner’s manual to find the precise location.
  • Outside the reservoir, you’ll find “minimum” and “maximum” lines. If the brake fluid is close to the minimum line, you’ll want a brake fluid replacement.
  • Inspect yourbrake fluid color. If it’s dark and looks like oil, it’s time to get the brake fluid flushed.

What Color is Brake Fluid?

Now that you’ve learned how to check brake fluid, you’ll want to understand what its color means. What color is brake fluid? New brake fluid is almost colorless with a yellowish tint to it. Brake fluid color changes after some time as you use your brakes, however. As mentioned, dark, oil-like brake fluid has gotten soil and trash mixed in overtime, which can influence brake performance if not changed.

Brake Fluid Service Intervals

You should check your brake fluid with each oil change, or possibly once every year. Brake fluid can last around four to five years, yet this differs depending upon the vehicle, driving habits, and driving conditions. Still not sure how to check brake fluid or how often? When you visit our service center, our trained service technicians are available to let you know when it’s time to change your brake fluid.
